The Eel Garden is one of Aqaba's most charming and unusual dives. A gentle sandy slope here is home to one of the largest colonies of garden eels in the Red Sea — hundreds of slender eels swaying from the seabed like blades of grass in the current.
The story of Eel Garden
The fine, open sand of this slope is exactly the habitat garden eels need, and the colony has thrived undisturbed for years. The site has become a favourite for divers who love quirky behaviour and for photographers patient enough to capture the shy eels.
Marine life & what you'll see
The eels are the stars — extend out of their burrows to feed and vanish the instant you approach, so slow, calm diving is rewarded. Around them the sand hosts seahorses, lionfish, scorpionfish and flatfish, while the reef edges of the slope add the usual colourful coral fish.
Diving Eel Garden
At around 20 metres over gentle terrain, the Eel Garden suits most certified divers and is an easy, relaxed dive that rewards a slow, patient approach. Good buoyancy helps you drift close to the colony without scattering it. It is reached from shore and boat in calm water.

Diving conditions & best time
Aqaba offers some of the calmest, most accessible diving in the Red Sea, and Eel Garden is no exception. Water temperatures stay comfortable year-round, from about 21°C in winter to 27°C in summer, and visibility commonly runs 15–40 metres. Eel Garden is a shore & boat dive, so it can be enjoyed across most of the year; the calm gulf rarely sees big swell, and we dive it in small guided groups with all equipment available.

Plan your trip to Aqaba
Eel Garden lies just minutes from Aqaba's South Beach, on Jordan's Red Sea coast. Aqaba has its own international airport (King Hussein International) and is an easy drive from Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum, so a dive here fits neatly into a wider Jordan itinerary. Diving runs year-round — bring sun protection, your certification card and logbook, and we will take care of the rest.
