The Japanese Garden is, for many divers, the single prettiest spot in Aqaba. This shallow coral garden takes its name from the many large, rounded coral heads that rise from the slope like the ornamental stones of a traditional Japanese garden, and it sits within a protected stretch of the South Beach marine reserve.
The story of Japanese Garden
As a protected reserve site, the Japanese Garden has been spared much of the pressure that affects busier reefs, so its hard and soft corals are exceptionally healthy. It has been a cornerstone of Aqaba diving for decades and remains the site most instructors choose for a diver's very first open-water experiences.
Marine life & what you'll see
The reef is alive with colour from just below the surface: anthias swarm above the coral heads, butterflyfish and angelfish drift between the bommies, and parrotfish crunch at the hard coral. Look into the crevices for moray eels and lionfish, scan the sand for rays, and keep an eye on the blue — turtles are seen here regularly.

Sloping gently from around 5 metres to 30 metres, the Japanese Garden genuinely suits everyone. Snorkellers enjoy the shallow corals, beginners do their first dives over the gentle slope, and more experienced divers follow the reef deeper. Easy access from shore and boat, calm water and superb visibility complete the picture.

Diving conditions & best time
Aqaba offers some of the calmest, most accessible diving in the Red Sea, and Japanese Garden is no exception. Water temperatures stay comfortable year-round, from about 21°C in winter to 27°C in summer, and visibility commonly runs 15–40 metres. Japanese Garden is a shore & boat dive, so it can be enjoyed across most of the year; the calm gulf rarely sees big swell, and we dive it in small guided groups with all equipment available.
